Shut Up, Imposter Syndrome

Sharrin Fuller

Let’s be real—if you’ve ever felt like you’re not good enough, not experienced enough, or just straight-up faking it, you’re not alone. Imposter syndrome is one of the biggest mental traps entrepreneurs face, and the worst part? It doesn’t go away just because you get more successful. In fact, the bigger you grow, the louder that little voice in your head gets, whispering that you don’t actually deserve to be here. That’s the lie. And it’s time to shut it down.

You’re Not the Only One

Here’s the thing about imposter syndrome: it’s way more common than you think. Studies show that nearly 70% of professionals experience it at some point in their careers, and for business owners, that number is probably even higher. Why? Because entrepreneurship is one giant game of figuring it out as you go. There’s no step-by-step manual. No one gives you a certificate that says, Congratulations! You are now officially qualified to be an entrepreneur! You wake up every day, make decisions, take risks, and hope to hell you’re doing it right. And somewhere along the way, that self-doubt creeps in and convinces you that everyone else knows what they’re doing—except you.

The Comparison Trap Is Destroying Your Confidence

If imposter syndrome had a best friend, it would be social media. Nothing fuels self-doubt faster than scrolling through a feed full of people who seem to have it all figured out. You see their perfectly curated wins, their six-figure launches, their I’m so humbled to be featured in Forbes posts—and suddenly, your own progress feels like a joke.

What you don’t see? The stress, the failed launches, the nights they cried in their car before walking into a meeting. No one posts that part. But it’s there. Every single entrepreneur, even the ones you admire most, has had moments where they felt like they didn’t belong. The difference between them and the people who let imposter syndrome win? They kept going anyway.

The Lies Imposter Syndrome Tells You (and the Truth That Shuts It Down)

Let’s go ahead and call out some of the biggest lies imposter syndrome tries to sell you:

Lie #1: “You don’t know enough to do this.”

Truth: No one does—until they do it. You don’t need a PhD in business to start a company. You learn by doing. Every successful entrepreneur was once a beginner who knew nothing.

Lie #2: “People will find out you’re a fraud.”

Truth: A fraud is someone who pretends to be something they’re not. You’re not pretending—you’re building, growing, and figuring things out. That’s called learning, not lying.

Lie #3: “Other people are more qualified than you.”

Truth: Maybe. But are they you? Do they have your unique perspective, your life experience, your way of solving problems? Expertise isn’t just about credentials—it’s about how you show up and help people.

Lie #4: “If you were really good, it wouldn’t feel this hard.”

Truth: Growth is always uncomfortable. The fact that you’re pushing through the hard stuff means you’re leveling up. The only people who never feel like imposters are the ones who never step outside their comfort zone.

How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome and Build Unshakable Confidence

Okay, so we’ve called out the lies. Now what? How do you actually break free from imposter syndrome when it feels so damn real?

1. Recognize It for What It Is

Imposter syndrome isn’t proof that you’re not good enough. It’s proof that you’re stretching yourself. It shows up because you’re doing something big. Instead of letting it hold you back, take it as a sign that you’re on the right track.

2. Flip the Script on Negative Self-Talk

Next time that voice in your head tells you you’re not good enough, challenge it. Would you say that to a friend? Would you tell them they don’t deserve their success, even after all the work they’ve put in? No? Then why are you saying it to yourself?

Try this: Every time a negative thought pops up, replace it with the truth. Instead of “I’m not experienced enough,” say, “I have valuable skills and insights, and I’m always learning.” Instead of “I don’t belong here,” say, “I worked for this, and I deserve to be here.”

3. Stop Comparing Yourself to the Highlight Reel

Social media is not real life. Unfollow, mute, or take a break if you have to, but stop using someone else’s success as proof that you’re failing. Your journey is yours. No one else’s timeline matters.

4. Keep a ‘Proof of Awesome’ File

Start keeping a folder—on your phone, in your email, wherever—filled with every positive thing people have said about your work. Client testimonials, emails from happy customers, a DM from someone who said you inspired them. On the days imposter syndrome tries to tell you you’re not good enough, pull up that folder and remind yourself: You are damn good at what you do.

5. Do It Anyway

The best way to silence imposter syndrome? Take action. Fear thrives in hesitation. When you sit on an idea too long, self-doubt creeps in. But when you move—when you take that risk, launch the offer, raise your prices, put yourself out there—you prove to yourself that you can. Confidence doesn’t come before action. It comes because of action.

Final Thought: You Belong Here

Imposter syndrome is a liar. It will never go away completely, but you can learn to see it for what it is—a sign that you’re growing. You don’t need permission to be in the room. You don’t need someone else to validate your success. You are already enough, already qualified, already capable.

So stop waiting to feel “ready.” The only difference between you and the people who are where you want to be is that they didn’t let imposter syndrome stop them. And neither should you.
